New Hyundai Models with a Manual Gearbox in 2023
For many sports car enthusiasts, a stick shift and clutch pedal are the only way to drive. There’s nothing better than feeling an engine pull through it’s full range as you row through gears. However in recent years, fewer and fewer automakers are including a manual option in their lineup. Hyundai though still offers four new models with a manual transmission.
A 6-speed manual is available as a standard for these 2023 models:
For these light and short wheel-base vehicles, their inline-4 engine's 6300 rpm redline and manual gearbox is sure to add some excitement to even the shortest commutes. Additionally, you can expect comparable fuel economy to the Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) variants of each model.
Hyundai N Performance
If you are looking for a manual gearbox with performance in mind, the Hyundai N Line vehicles have what you’re looking for. The Hyundai N Performance brand kicked off in North America with its flagship: the Veloster N. With a 6-speed manual and a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds, the Veloster N is a more than capable hot hatch. The Veloster N also features performance-oriented technology like the N Mode button and electronically customizable rev-matching for faster up-shifts and more aggressive down-shifts.
Hyundai SHIFTRONIC Dual-Clutch Transmission
The Elantra GT is also available in an N Line trim with either the standard 6-speed manual or a 7-speed SHIFTRONIC dual-clutch. Matching either transmission with the 201 horsepower 1.6L turbocharged engine will take this touring wagon from 0-60 in 6.6 seconds or 6.3 seconds respectively.
How to Use Hyundai SHIFTRONIC Manual Mode
In the Elantra GT N, the Hyundai SHIFTRONIC Mode allows you to take control of your gear shifting with the use of a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). To activate SHIFTRONIC mode, slide your shifter lever over to the manual shifting position. You will then be able to change gears by pushing the lever forward to go up a gear, or pulling the lever back to down-shift. If your vehicle is equipped with paddle shifters like the Elantra GT N, they will be activated, allowing you to shift sequentially without taking your hands off the steering wheel.
What Is a Dual-Clutch Transmission?
Sequential transmissions have been a part of motorsports for years. Similar to a manual gearbox, a clutch is used to disengage power from the gears while shifting. However, in a dual-clutch transmission, one clutch manages the odd gears, while the other handles the even gears. This allows Hyundai’s DCT to shift faster than a conventional manual transmission without any power lost in-between shifts.
